APEX SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

APEX is a proud partner of local, private high schools in the Los Angeles area. We are seeking caring host families for international students arriving in mid-August.

Hosting an international student is a unique and rewarding experience that promotes cultural exchange, global understanding, and lifelong connections. Host families play a vital role in supporting students as they adjust to life in the U.S. while pursuing an excellent education.

Host families receive a generous monthly stipend, ongoing local support, and the opportunity to share daily life, traditions, and community with a motivated student from abroad.

Special incentives available:

  • Educators receive a one-time $1,000 sign-on bonus
  • Earn a $500 referral bonus for each new host family you refer and is matched with a student

Students are English-speaking and eager to become part of an American family.

Mini Mischief Ranch: Where Animals, Laughter, and Community Come Together

Tucked between Hutto and Taylor, Mini Mischief Ranch is a hidden gem with a big heart. What started as Stacy Ham’s dream to combine her love of animals with her passion for helping others has grown into a nonprofit 501(c)(3) “care farm” that’s quickly capturing the community’s imagination.

At Mini Mischief, visitors don’t hand out food or treats. Instead, the animals are known — and loved — for their personalities, their snuggles, and their craving for scratches and attention. “It’s about building genuine connection, not transactions,” Stacy says. “The animals see people as friends, not food.”

“I wanted to create a place where families could slow down, connect with animals, and connect with each other,” she adds. “Mini Mischief is about joy, growth, and a little bit of silliness too.”

A Herd Full of Personality

From Rip and Roper, the mischievous best-friend goats, to Clover the gentle mini cow, to Buddy the pig who teaches lessons in inclusion (he’s deaf, but full of personality), every animal at the ranch has a name, a story, and a role in making visitors feel welcome. Children often leave with a new “favorite,” while adults find themselves laughing at the antics and touched by the quiet moments of connection.

More Than a Petting Zoo

Mini Mischief Ranch is intentionally different from a traditional petting zoo. Here, animals aren’t viewed as attractions — they’re family. Stacy doesn’t allow feeding or treats during visits. Instead, the animals are raised to connect with people through affection and trust.

“Our goats, cows, pigs, and donkeys know visitors for the scratches, pets, and attention they get — not for food,” Stacy explains. “That makes the interaction more meaningful. The animals truly crave love and companionship, and that’s what makes every visit special.”

Two unique enrichment programs bring young people closer to this philosophy of connection:

Farm Club (Elementary Students): Weekly adventures blending animal care, crafts, and STEM-style activities.

ROOTS Leadership Program (Middle & High School): Hands-on teamwork and responsibility lessons that help teens grow as leaders.

Stacy calls these “farm classrooms,” where curiosity and character grow side by side.

A Mission of Care

Mini Mischief is also becoming a partner in therapy and special needs support. Stacy collaborates with therapists and educators to offer calm, private animal-assisted visits that encourage comfort and regulation. These visits are primarily funded through scholarships made possible by the income from general farm visits, ensuring that families with financial barriers can still benefit.

The ranch’s recent approval as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit allows community members and businesses to support this mission directly, whether through donations or by joining the “Mini Mischief Guardians” sponsorship program to help care for specific animals.

Community Mischief

Beyond programs, the ranch hosts seasonal add-ons like scarecrow building, pumpkin carving, and rock art. Families can also book private visits by appointment, making each trip unique and personal.

A Place for Connection

For Stacy, Mini Mischief Ranch is about more than goats, pigs, and cows. It’s about cultivating connection — to animals, to nature, and to each other. “When people step onto the ranch, I want them to feel a little spark of wonder,” she says. “That’s where the mischief — and the magic — begins.”
